HOW TO HIRE AN ANDROID DEV
A hiring manager's guide to identifying great Android developers. From technical assessment to culture fit, a practical framework for making the right hire.

Technical Skills to Evaluate
Deep knowledge of Kotlin or Java (null safety, coroutines, generics), proficiency with Jetpack Compose or XML layouts, and hands-on experience with architecture patterns (MVVM, MVP, MVI) are critical. Also verify testing skills (Espresso, JUnit, Mockito), performance optimization (memory leak prevention, ANR avoidance), and CI/CD experience (GitHub Actions, Bitrise, Fastlane).
Red Flags
Developers who only know Java and resist Kotlin will fall behind in modern Android development. No experience with Jetpack libraries (ViewModel, Room, Navigation) makes building maintainable apps difficult. Developers who dismiss testing or have zero app store publishing experience will struggle with post-release quality assurance and operations.
The Hiring Process
1. Portfolio review: Check apps published on Google Play and evaluate architecture and UI quality. 2. Technical interview: Deep dive into Kotlin language features, Jetpack Compose state management, async processing (coroutines/flow), and error handling. 3. Practical assignment: Have them build a simple CRUD app within 4 hours and evaluate code quality, architecture decisions, and UI attention. 4. Culture fit: Verify remote work experience, async communication skills, and self-direction.
Verdict
A great Android developer leverages the latest Kotlin features while navigating the Jetpack ecosystem with confidence. Beyond technical skills, performance awareness and a dedication to user experience matter. If hiring is difficult, starting with a flexible fractional contract is pragmatic.
