HOW TO HIRE A NEXT.JS DEV
A hiring manager's guide to identifying great Next.js developers. From technical assessment to culture fit, a practical framework for making the right hire.

Technical Skills to Evaluate
Deep React knowledge (Hooks, Concurrent Features, Server Components), thorough understanding of App Router, and proper distinction between Server and Client Components are critical. Also verify data fetching patterns (Server Actions, combined use with React Query/SWR), experience with Vercel and edge deployment, and performance optimization (Core Web Vitals, Streaming, Partial Prerendering).
Red Flags
Developers who confuse App Router with Pages Router cannot properly leverage Next.js's latest features. Those who don't understand the difference between SSR and SSG tend to choose architectures that harm performance and SEO. Developers who ignore caching strategies (fetch cache, Route Segment Config) cause unexpected behavior and performance degradation. Developers with no deployment experience on Vercel or other platforms are also a red flag.
The Hiring Process
1. Portfolio review: Check actual projects using Next.js 13+ App Router. 2. Technical interview: Deep dive into Server Component design decisions, data fetching strategies, and performance optimization. 3. Practical assignment: Have them build a simple blog or dashboard within 4 hours and evaluate code quality, architecture decisions, and SEO handling. 4. Culture fit: Verify remote work experience, async communication skills, and self-direction.
Verdict
A great Next.js developer firmly grasps React fundamentals while freely wielding the App Router's new paradigm. Understanding the boundary between server and client, and being able to design with performance and SEO in mind, is key to hiring the right person. If hiring is difficult, starting with a flexible fractional contract is pragmatic.
